JET JWBS-14DXPRO Band Saw Review
JET JWBS-14DXPRO 14-Inch
Deluxe Pro Band Saw Review
The JET JWBS-14DXPRO Band Saw is deliver in 2 boxes - one with the base cabinet and the other with the upper saw unit. Unless you have a hoist available, assembling the two halves, one atop the other is a two person job. At over 200 lbs it's a bit heavy for one person. After bolting the saw in place, only the cast iron table need be installed. Now you can begin the band saw set-up process.
The JET JWBS-14DXPRO Band Saw seems larger than it should, the frame is over 6 inches taller than your standard 14" saws. Why the extra six inches? The JET Band Saw includes the additional height to offer a full 12" of re-saw capacity. By increasing the height and size of the frame JET was able to retain the full 13 ½ inch cutting width, while removing the need for adding riser blocks. Installing rise blocks has always be a troublesome time consuming chore. Eliminating wide riser blocks while increasing the frame size seems to be a fair trade off in overall footprint, and it eliminates the need to re-aligned the top and bottom wheels after installing the riser block. The larger frame allows for the elimination of the need to move the switch, or use extension cord for the motor, or make post upgrades. And it has the added benefit of adding some more storage space in the lower cabinet.
The table can be split for blade access and has a tapered slip pin which maintains alignment of the table surfaces during operation. The saw uses well-balance cast iron wheels which allows it to run with low vibration. The wheel covered with yellow polyurethane tires designed to retain the tires shape throughout its extended life. The yellow tire color contrast easily allows you to see the blade tracking through the upper cabinet window. The serpentine belt drive in the lower cabinet allow the belt to rides on the lower wheel and contains a step pulley that allows you to choose between the standard 3000 FPM or a resawing 1500 FPM speed. The upper and lower wheels run on over-sized sealed ball-bearing, which keep the track wheeling tracking straight and helping to reduce friction. The tires are colored yellow so you can clearly see the blade tracking. To make adjusting tracking even easier the JET JWBS-14DXPRO Band Saw has a "window" in the upper cabinet so you can visualize your tracking adjustments without leaving the cabinets open. With the motor mounted directly on the frame, you do easily do it in the lower wheel cabinet where everything is easily in reach and in view.
The post has a full-length scale which allows the user to quickly set the height, and a built-in retractable auto-extending blade guard, (which collapses out of the way when fully raised) keeps the blade covered at any post height. The JET Saw uses a hand operated screw and spring system to apply blade tension, or make specific changes as needed. Although not the best system available it works well after some user effort. A quick release blade tension ensures flexibility and fast, effortless adjustments.
The dust collection system includes a four inch dust port is on the blade path beneath the table, and a brush on the lower wheel. When properly connected the dust that usually accumulates in the cabinets is taken away as it is created. It not perfect but it works.
The JET JWBS-14DXPRO Band Saw is equipped with a 1.25HP, 1PH 115/230V TEFC motor and easily handles any common woodworking tasks, and its cutting capacities in both flat and re-saw modes allows it be a good choice for any size shop. Physically the size and foot print of the JET Band Saw (even with rear steel feet extended for addition re-saw stability) is only marginally larger than a standard 14” band saw. Overall the saw is quiet with little vibration, the table surface and control are at comfortable user levels. The 15” x 15” work table tilts 10 degrees left and 45 degree right and includes a bevel scale at the users side table locking knob. The band saw delivers when power is needed, and has the capacity to take on tough jobs, or hand more delicate work. It not the cheapest 14” band saw, but its combination of ease of use, clean cuts, and power are hard to beat.
