Jigs for Woodturning

skew chisel
Woodturning use a number of jigs many of which can be made in-shop.

Drill Press Jig

This simple device was originally shown to me by my friend Raymond Sanders of "Beenatree" who has given me his blessing to reproduce the jig and to create a drawing with arbitrary dimensions to share with others.

Bottle Stopper Jig

One of the easiest projects for a beginning turner to undertake has to be bottle stoppers.  They require little wood, the corks and  dowels are quite cheap, and they afford new turners an excellent opportunity to develop tool control, particularly with the skew.

Pen Drilling Jig

I made up a jig for drilling the center holes in the pen blanks.

Sharpening Jig

King Heiple's Shop-Built Jig

Creating a fingernail grind on your spindle gouge by eye is possible but difficult, even for a seasoned turner.

Wood Turning Tools Sharpening Jig

Sharpening wood turning tools quickly and consistently is a constant problem for a wood turner. We stand in front of a machine that throws wood at us at about 75 miles an hour and stop it with sharp tools. A typical gouge cuts more wood in a few minutes than a hand plane does in an hour.
